The Fischbrunnen or Fish Fountain is located directly in front of the New Town Hall in Marienplatz, the heart of the city of Munich. Originally this fountain served as a well to extract the subway water that once circulated through the center of Munich. It was also the place where the fishmongers left their baskets with live fish that they would later sell at the market that was formerly located on this square.
The current fountain is very different from the original one, which was in Gothic style and was destroyed during World War II. It was in 1954, when the sculptor Josef Henselmann created the new fountain in its present form.
Today the Fischbrunnen is much simpler, but not without beauty. Its deep blue painted basin makes the water more vivid in color. In the center there is a column decorated by four bronze figures representing butchers. It is crowned by the figure of a fish that recalls the old market and the use that the fishmongers made of the fountain.
